52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Royal Purple

This color reminded me considerably of the color patriarch, that we did last year. I had to call on my friend Stewart to help me out for that one so of course I had to call on him again. He asked me why didn’t I do Messalina, who was, and I quote, “one hell of a lady”.

So here she is, an empress of Rome who had some pretty serious power in her time, but one who lost her life because of her insecurities. She reminds me a bit of Atia of the Julii from the HBO series Rome, if any of you have seen that. What machinations, what intrigue! What a dreadful need for power and position that led her to get rid of (i.e. assassinate) any rivals for the throne, and eventually lose her own head.

But what a head it must have been! I chose the Artemis skin from Unique to give me a patrician look with deadly purpose.

During my very first visit with my mother-in-law I got so sick I thought I was going to die.  And my husband was out somewhere with my brother-in-law so it was just me and her. Can anybody say AWKWARD??? But being the amazing lady she is, she made me an herbal tea that to this day is probably the most heavenly thing I can think of to drink, whether hot or cold. And I didn’t die, so who knows whether it was just a passing thing or if it was magic tea???

This gorgeous new skirt from coldLogic reminded me of that tea today…if you feel like making it here is what to use:

2 parts dried lemon verbena leaves (you can use fresh as well)
1 part dried lemongrass
1 part dried melissa leaves (I believe this is called lemon balm in English)

Pour boiling water over the dried leaves and let it sit for 5-7 minutes. Strain out the leaves. Add sugar or whatever sweetener you like and enjoy your own little moment of heaven.

The Days of Love and Leaves

One of the first places I found as a newbie in SL was the Garden of Sorrows on Midsomer Isle. It’s dripping, mist-shrouded atmosphere finds all kinds of solitary, brooding folk enjoying the ambience of dead trees and melancholy mood. I have history in the Garden of Sorrows myself, and every now and then I go there to think about things.

Since it is rainy I chose to go appropriately shod for the wet weather in the new Timber boots from Miel. My dress is a loose, lovely mesh creation from Ibizarre that is at the Designer Circle this round.

Truth Hawks always makes casual hair look so fabulous. If I actually tried this pulled-back style in real life it would be a snarly mess. Another thing that is better than real life is crying—in SL I can cry very prettily. In real life, though, it’s the ugly cry all the way.

I’ve been spending a lot of time one-on-one with my sweet dog Luna this past week. I always wanted to have a dog best friend when I was growing up, but it never happened. And sometimes it’s a crap shoot with dogs—you don’t know if you are going to connect emotionally or if your dog is going to just want to roam all over anyplace but home--but we sure got a good one. After my husband she is the best friend I have. (I sometimes tease my husband and tell him that apart from her, I am the best friend he has. You can tell we are equally besotted.) Seriously, though, don’t you want some of this?

My lovely Great Dane Con in SL shares some of her attributes…he loves to go on walks.

Also like my Luna, he loves to get distracted. Squirrels, anyone? Good think I am watching for the same thing….

And when that happens, thank heavens for the leash! (I know all you dog-owners can relate.)

Gone to Carolina

I am on my own this weekend while my husband is in North Carolina for a conference. We lived in NC for four years (probably the best four years of my life) and while I wasn’t able to go with him in body, I am definitely with him in spirit. My friend Finned and I were at Fashion for Life late Tuesday night throwing L’s at vendors so we could hit the goal of 5.25 million. The only problem was trying to decide what to choose from all the awesome stuff there was. Anyway, Finned gave me this dress and told me I was assigned to blog it. This is one of Azul’s FFL items and it makes me feel very Kate Middleton—so feminine and princessy. Maybe I should have worn my hair down.

Another item that I am happy to blog about is the new Nadia skin from HUIT. I really like the youthful shine of this skin. My favorite thing, however, is the collarbone and neck transition. This is a hard thing to get right in skins, and Nadia has a slight dip and bend in the collarbone and the neck tendons flow naturally into the neck and chin.

Also a shout out to the new Firestorm viewer…I cranked my graphics up as high as they would go and enabled shadows and ambience and all what have you, and nary a graphics line to be found! Thanks, team!

Fashion For Life 2012: Epilogue

I don’t know about you, but it seemed like FFL was here and gone in the blink of an eye this year. In the end we did meet Harper’s challenge goal and she made her triumphant way through the sims as promised, in pig form. So they do fly, after all, it seems. You can see a couple of pictures of Harper happily on her way here and see how much was raised during the event.

Fashion For Life 2012: Tres Beau

Now, I am admittedly a more casual dresser, even in SL, but when you put on a dress like this one, there is only one thing to do, and that is get ready to go out. Now if I can only find my shoes!

Things To Come

It really isn’t spring yet. My mind knows that there are a few more days to go, but the weather has been so kooky this year that my body is fully tricked into thinking it’s halfway through spring and that summer is on the way—time for slowing down, for bare feet, for comfy jeans, for getting rid of the pasty white complexion. Happily all of this is available right now in SL. The summer-lover in me always heads to Lily Ixtar’s Belle Bayou. Many of her builds are based on places from her real life…all I can say is I envy her.

My comfy and body-skimming jeans are all the rage now from Elie Spot, and my skin is a new release from Samara Pennell at Unique, called Brazilian. Now, I am not Brazilian or anything like unto it, but if I could look like this I might not mind claiming that nationality. For the close up I did no photo editing beyond cropping and blurring the background a little.

I had a hard time telling how this was different from electric blue in week 3. This was a color that probably inspired us all to do a little research. In the end I was glad for the slightly muted cast of this color, as I was in the mood for calm and relaxing.

Fashion for Life 2012: Fantavatar, Vanity Flair, Vaughan

I have been looking forward to blogging this dress since I first saw it. I’ve been reading Jack McDevitt’s fantastic, world-hopping A Talent for War, and this dress makes me feel like a someone from a similarly unearthly, Fifth-Element-esque alien world. It is a partial-mesh dress, combining the best of both clothing-design worlds:

My fabulous orange shoes are from Indyra Originals. I have a few favorites in this outfit, but I particularly like this swooping, physical-law-defining hairstyle from Marleen Vaughan. Also a favorite are the Sonata Volta Time FFLEyes from Lera Keng. Both system and prim eyes are included. I went with the prim eyes so they could be made smaller as the system eyes were a bit too large, even the small size.

It’s another fabulous day at Fashion for Life. Today I decided to take my photos at the amazing It’s Time sim, with it’s gorgeous, celebratory clocks. Today I am wearing the beautiful Nuage skirt from Leezu Baxter. Leezu is one of the four sponsors of this gorgeous sim. It took some doing to find a top to match those poppies, but I found perfection in this dress top from Riddle.

I am also wearing some awesome accessories today. My chain belt is new from the mesh-jewelry maven Maxi Gossamer. My earrings and ring are both from gachas, so get out there and play them—there’s some great stuff!

Fashion for Life 2012: L&B, Miamai, Gos, WTG

There is so much amazingness at Fashion For Life! I am not sure which is more fun, shopping for the clothes or looking for places on the awesome builds to take the photos. Zeit, built by Grace Loudon, has to be one of my favorite sims, with its retro colors and bright atmosphere…the filling station gacha building was a must have for today’s photo.

My dress today is a gorgeous partial-mesh creation from Miamai. I just love how designers are using mesh to fix that skirt prim-flap issue. Well done! I chose to wear it with my new favorite jacket in the world from Lapointe & Bastchild. I am so in love with the textures from this team, they are always detailed and flawless. And my tribute-to-Grease hairstyle is from Marleen Vaughan. Take that, Sandy!

And as if that weren’t enough! The FFL Meimei skin is giving me all kinds of chills with it’s smooth texture and creamy tone. I am wearing a tan overlay tattoo because it was a little bit on the pale side for me, but if you are looking for pale and gorgeous, Meimei is your girl! And I also love this intricately detailed jewelry set from WTG. And a shout out to my girl Maxi Gossamer, for her incredible mesh Swallow Wings lashes. I admit I was a bit skeptical when I first saw them, but I have seen the light!

This week didn’t turn out quite as I had planned—I went to the Rejectz sim to take a photo and inadvertently set up right in the middle of some gun shooting event. The sim owner, Sh0rtie, was extremely gracious and even posed for me…he looks all kinds of bad, huh? I am definitely in the wrong part of town! During our conversation Sh0rtie did let me know that Glue has the best tattoos—so you know where to go, everyone! This is only a small part of the sim, but it’s a great build. Remember that it is a roleplay sim, so if you go there please respect the rules.

What’s more fun than taking photos of yourself? Taking photos with a friend! Today I got to have a little fun time with my girl Shay, whom you probably know from Shayariel’s World of SL Fashion. You can see we had a great time seeing the sights on her adorable scooter!

Most of what I wearing can be found on the Aika sim. My blue and white top is one Zaara Kohime’s FFL items in her store. It goes perfectly with Pixieplumb Flanagan’s Nadine pumps, which are Baby Monkey’s FFL item. Hm….did they plan this???

Shay is wearing the denim one-piece dress from Sakuya Lane at Feather. The vendor is on the inside of the storefront wall, so don’t miss it! I had a marvelous time wandering around the fantastically built sims for Fashion for Life last evening. There is so much to see here folks, and it’s not restricted to fashion only…although I admit that’s what I spent most of my time checking out.

Alafolie sucked me right in with a great selection of semi-formal and formal wear. I grabbed this lovely sparkly number only partly because it would go so well with the amazingly awesome mesh boots from G. Field. Seriously, there was a scream or two when I saw them…aaaand they are a FFL item.

My skin is a youthful, lovely one from Hush. I am new to Hush Darkrose’s skins, but I will definitely be a repeat customer. Just look at the gorgeous flush and glow of the face! And last but not least are several new colors of eyes added to the Utopia line at IKON. There were actually a couple of new colors for the Sunrise line, too, to my great delight.

One other thing that I must, MUST mention is the Gacha areas. They are fantastic, people! My bracelets and earrings today are both from Gachas, and they are already favorites, so don’t pass the Gachas by or you will miss some great stuff.

Fashion For Life 2012: Silken Moon

Fashion for Life 2012 opens in just a few days…I can’t believe it is that time again! From the previews on the Fashion For Life blog, it is looking to be an extraordinary event:

My favorite thing about FFL is that so many completely amazing designers come together to support cancer research. If you are going to embrace a rallying cause, it’s a great one to choose. This year’s theme is “It’s  Time” and the sim decoration and many of the donation items will reflect that theme. My second favorite thing is that all of them come together in one virtual space so I can shop all my favorite places without having to tp all over. So if shopping annoys you and you want to just get it all done and go home, then FFL is for you. And if you love shopping, the FFL is for you, too!

Malicia Python will be offering this sexy mesh dress as one of the gatcha items at the event, but will also be including skins and eyes for sale in her booth. Here is the Vintage Wrapped Silk dress in purple—it is a dress made to be rocked!

Big Dogs

My first dog was a small, part Maltese mix named Katie. She was a decent dog, as far as family dogs go, but she was a yapper, and an uncontrollable one at that. She was not an attack dog, but she did love to bark. I have very fond memories of my Katie, but I did learn that a small, yapping dog was not the way I wanted to go in the future. I have always been a big dog kind of girl—the hounds, the working dogs—dogs with a purpose, I call them. Even though my own beautiful Luna does not pull carts or herd sheep like she was bred to do, she does keep watch on the house and deter anyone from approaching me on the street by looking big and scary.

Sadly, no one has made a Bernese Mountain Dog in SL yet—a huge omission if I do say so myself. However, that does not meant that the big dogs get no love:

Carrie Tatsu has created some of the most realistic-looking animals I have seen in SL. Animals are notoriously hard to create in SL—something about all those folding joints, I guess. But this big boy (named Con after one of my favorite vampire novel characters) looks realer than I do, right down to that very curious-canine expression in his eyes. Usually Great Danes aren’t quite so big, but my avatar is only 5’8” in SL, which is apparently midget-sized. But in any case, curling up with a big dog is way more satisfying than with a little one, so if you have your own big goof of a dog, show them some love today.

A dog like Con requires some no nonsense shoes (mostly for chasing) and I am wearing the comfy mesh Uggs from Guu Nishi at Hoc Industries today. Also, Maxi Gossamer has just released a new necklace called Babette, and while there is a very high likelihood that it will get caught on Con’s ears (or in his mouth), I couldn’t resist putting it on today.
