Happy Halloween

Here’s wishing everyone a safe and fun-filled holiday. Tonight I showcase my favorite spooky haunt this year, the Calas Galadhon Journey to the Lost City sim. It’s fantastically done and as creepy as you could wish for.

I am only showing one corner of the place here but can’t you just wait to run screaming through the place? I am definitely glad my pal Caroline came along so we could shriek together.

The Costume Ball

I do like Halloween, and as a teacher I go in for all the cutsie pumpkin, ghost and witch paraphernalia. But when I am in non-teacher mode I like the more creepy, dark stuff. Fortunately the Costume Ball is full of the dark and creepy. My dress is the Black Widow dress from Happy Undead, and my pale skin is from Pink Fuel. 52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Charcoal

Since we are leading up to Halloween, I wanted to pay tribute to my favorite Halloween-ish folk art of all time—the Calavera engravings of José Guadalupe Posada. Posada was a political satirist and unfortunately was not appreciated in his own time, but I adore these engravings, which so perfectly capture  the Mexican tradition of embracing death as an important part of being human.

I decided I would try to recreate the  center couple, and  for this I made my very first poses! (No sniggering, please!)

Mostly what I learned  is how talented one has to be to make poses and how talented in this area I am not.

Congrats to Harper Ganesvoort, who wins the Sasha’s gift card! Since I doubt that anyone would want my skeletons, I will forego the prize this week and double up next week!

Breezy

I don’t usually design my outfit around my hair, but today it was impossible to do anything else. Alice Demonia’s release at Cinema is a gorgeous windswept style. Of course in RL my hair would be a tangled, ratty mess, and totally lacking the heavy luster of this style—yet another reason to be grateful for SL. My cozy sweater and skirt are from Thetra Blackheart’s offering at the Designer Circle this round. And from the look of things Hurricane Sandy may get our leaves blowing in earnest pretty soon!

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Ghostly White

Last week I watched one of my favorite movies of all time: Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. I always pull out the creepy movies around this time, but there is so much awesomeness in this one I don’t know where to begin. Perhaps with David Bowie as the Goblin King. He sings, my friends, and he dances with goblins. He also wears the most amazing clothes, and the hair, well, I don’t even have words for the hair. So imagine my delight when I found that Lexi Vargas of GlamDammit had created a whole Goblin King ensemble! He kindly agreed to Bowie-up for this photo shoot, and a magnificent Goblin King he doth make! All of this was also on my mind since the Costume Ball event starts next week and looks to be a fantastic event.

Now admit it girls, you ALL wanted to be Jennifer Connelly in the ballroom scene (very creepy scene, but very cool) when you first saw this movie. The poofy dress, the big hair, the gorgeous jewelry, and getting to dance with the villanous-yet-attractive Goblin King…it just sent my young female brain right over the edge. My poofy dress comes courtesy of Sascha Frangilli, and let’s face it, for ballroom-wear, Sascha just can’t be beat. I will give away a Sascha’s gift card next week!

Night-time

I love a night-time fire. Toasting marshmallows, telling stories, or just dreaming. One favorite family tradition of mine is when my dad tells ghost stories around the campfire at our yearly family reunion. I promise there really was fire, and not just smoke! Then of course you have to have a boy sticking some sort of object into the fire to have it all be complete. My nephew did the honors this year.

My fire comes from the fabulous Winter Thorn at What Next. My comfy chair and glowing fire can make a girl very drowsy when she hasn’t got a dad scaring her (or making her laugh, as the case may be) with ghost stories!  I stay snug and warm in my chunky mesh turtleneck from Eclectic Wingtips and my sturdy boots from L’Emporio.

Love

In Spanish 2 today we were texting sentences to a web-based application that will then appear on the overhead screen as they are submitted. This was my favorite:

The 9th graders can be unbelieveably frustrating, but sometimes they can be unbelievably adorable. And while I had to tell him that was the wrong “love” verb to use for his teacher, I assured him that I knew that he didn’t love me like that.

However, I can relate, because I do love this month’s item from Fanatik at FaMeshed like that. I love the combination of red and brown and the texture is beautiful.

Detour

Recently it seems like every road that leads to where I work is under construction. Just when I find an unobstructed road, it goes under construction within the week. Sometimes public transportation works, but buses have to travel the same roads,  so it would seem I am out of luck. For the next few years at least, clear roads will  be nothing but a dream!
