Taking The Leap

The buzz around my office is that the school year is going by amazingly fast and that 3rd quarter feels especially crunched. It’s barely the end of February and already we are working on course planning and textbooks for next September. There is a widely held theory at my school that pretty much once you hit Thanksgiving it’s all practically over for the year. It’s a preposterous idea, but this year it feels like there some truth to it. Keeping up is a challenge, and leaves less time for other things, as is pretty obvious from my blog slow-down. So I am glad for a leap day this year, although I am not sure that in the end it really works out as extra time. But spring break is coming, so that will be a nice chance to regroup and remember things outside of work, like my name and where I live and that I do have a husband, and as I recall I kind of like him. So when Vero Modero sent out the notices for the new spring collection, I was more than ready to jump on board!

I am such a fan when Bou makes casual clothes, they always look so perfect and I always wish I had them in RL. This is an outfit that I would love to wear to school, but I am afraid I would get chalk dust and whiteboard marker all over it, so maybe it would be better suited to prancing around some fabulous European city.

While a lot of the items available at the Festival of Sin are decidedly not my style, there are some gems to be found. I just adore the new Essences skin from Inka Mexicola, with it’s barely-there smattering of freckles and delicate bone structure visible beneath the skin of the face and chest. Mmm…March Mesh Madness 2012

I love and adore mesh. It certainly comes with its challenges, but the drape, texture and shaping of fabrics, jewelry and all things mesh just make my visually- oriented heart sing. So the upcoming mesh event hosted by the great mesh-pioneer Damien Fate has got me and a lot of other people very excited!

The March Mesh Madness event begins March 1^st and will take place on FATEisland. When I found out what designers would be participating I did a bit of traveling to get an idea of what we have to look forward to…here is just a bit of what was out there:

When I was little I remember going to visit my great-aunt Margaret. She had a great big cherry orchard and raspberry patch that we would visit at picking time. I definitely remember doing a lot more eating than picking, though! Fortunately I have a lot of brothers and sisters and we managed to get all the picking done. I always liked this verse about music. It seems to apply to all kinds of music and sound, whether you are a classical musician or a head-banging metalhead. About a month ago Jamman released this beautiful music-themed set. I have worn it several times since then. One of Jamman’s specialties is his tiny, detailed prim work.

One thing about research in SL is that you find some nice things along the way. I found quite a few new-to-me hairstyles from Argrace on the marketplace and chose to wear one of them today. The Argrace store is closed and under construction at the moment so all of the hair designs are on the Marketplace for the time being. Love Challenge

Luna Jubilee recently threw down a love challenge in response to a big number of people suffering from what I can only describe as the blahs. I’ve been feeling them myself, so this seemed like a fun way to step back and take a look at what I love in SL. I really like a lot of things about SL but there are only a few that I love. Some are objects or huds, but I have some good friends in SL too, and it’s one of them that I want to highlight for my love challenge.

This is Stewart. I’ve known Stewart for a couple of years.

Stewart usually doesn’t speak unless spoken to. (I remember falling out of my chair the first time he spoke to me unprompted) Stewart loves mathematics. Stewart still has the same shape and skin he started off with in SL and sees no reason to change. He is a self-identified grump, but is quite chivalrous and is always dashing into frays to stop jerks from perpetuating their jerkiness. He’s the perfect catalyst for my brain--I am not someone who can self-generate creativity—sometimes he can say one word to me that starts an explosion of creative ideas.

What I most love about Stewart is his generosity. He lets me put stuff all over his sim and when I go over the allowed prims he doesn’t get mad, just gives a gentle nudge, “maybe a couple hundred fewer prims, dear?” He re-terraforms to suit whatever random structure I am sticking on his property and asks no questions. And when I needed a place to retrench for awhile, he freely gave me that place, again asking no questions and asking for nothing in return. Everyone needs a friend like that.

He likes fitting prims together into intricate buildings—especially buildings that actually exist in RL. He’s especially insistent that those buildings be historically and architecturally accurate. Here is his recreation of Doune Castle in Scotland. In the background you can see his build of Harlech Castle in Wales.

The great American poet Grace Noll Cowell puts how I feel about Stewart into words better than I can.

Worth The Wait

There has been a lot to look forward to in SL lately and is it ever welcome news! There has been a lot of buzz around the opening of the mesh collaboration store coldLogic. The items I have seen so far show a lot of style and artistry. I’d probably wear all of it in RL. Just look at the edges and stitching on the pants! I don’t even have a great graphics card, but there’s not a hint of a jagged edge or blurred seam anywhere. I actually had people stop me and ask where they could get them.

Another big release this week was the opening of Ikon Innovia’s new store with a new line of eyes. I’m pretty sure every girl on the grid was waiting for this release with bated breath (and probably not a few guys). Utopia is noticeably different from the Sunrise line, with subtle coloring and a slightly striated reflection that gives them a bit of a geometric cast. However, they retain all the life and luminosity that made us fall in love with Ikon’s work in the first place. Perfectly, perfectly lovely. And Ikon is really one of the nicest guys I ever met in SL. What’s not to love?

Complicated

Maybe my fellow bloggers will understand me on this one, but sometimes taking photos in SL is magical and everything comes together beautifully. Other times it takes forever trying to get everything work right. Today was one of the latter instances. But, in the end, the outfit was chosen, the location found, and photos taken. I couldn’t help but feel better wearing these great mesh boots from Leverocci. My skirt today is a lovely combination of mesh awesomeness and detailed artistry from Leezu Baxter.

And as the big love day approaches, we are starting to see a lot of Valentine’s-themed items. This gorgeous necklace is not necessarily for Valentines Day, but it fits the theme.

February is my least favorite month of the year. It has always been this way. February seems terribly blah to me. It’s the coldest month of the year where I live (although at least this year that doesn’t mean much) and it’s just feels like I’m in limbo, waiting for spring. Oh, and I always do the taxes in February. What a great month!

Valentine’s Day is stuck in there to liven things up, but honestly my husband and I only have one tradition…to see who can find the sappiest card available. I remember back in August when Janie Marlowe released her first mesh clothing designs. We had all been “waiting” for it for awhile, but boy did it ever explode once Janie started making it available. And boy did she crank out a lot of stuff those first few months! It was all anyone was talking or blogging about. There may have been quite a bit of viewer-based consternation about it (and the Phoenix people probably cried buckets), but the variety of mesh designs has continued to grow and now there are many designers who are getting on board. Janie, Damien Fate and Zyrra Falcone are now collaborating on a new mesh-based venture together, called coldLogic. They are opening on February 1st, so only two more days to wait. coldLogic has offered a free welcome dress in three colors to subscribers and it is a real beauty—style and comfort together! If this is what they start with, I can’t wait to see what comes next!

It’s the last definition that intrigued me, particularly as it relates to SL. What do you hide about yourself with your SL patina? Does your SL exterior cover up things about you? Is SL the ultimate patina? Ok, philosophical rambling over.

My patina today is comfortable and casual in great mesh pants from DCNY and a ruffled vest from Malt. I have the perfect backdrop in one of Lily Ixtar’s rental cottages at Belle Bayou.

This week I am going to give away a few pair of Arkesh Baral’s new mesh eyes from Mayfly! I fell in love with them a few weeks ago, and what can I say? I must share the love! Over the past three days half the ceiling in my classroom fell in due to a leak in the roof. The roof is one of those flat seventies inventions that make it completely impossible to find where the leak is coming from, so I’ve been teaching this week with random streams of water pouring in on top of students, books and equipment. Just so you know, trash and recycling bins make very good water catchers and the combination of water and LCD projector makes for some very interesting effects! So today I am ready for whatever the weather may bring, in my adorable Wellingtons from Gospel Voom and umbrella from The Sea Hole Collabor88 event. Here’s hoping for a drier week next week!

With all the holiday hoopla, the color challenge starting again, and oh yes, work in RL, there are quite a few items that I love but just haven’t gotten to yet. One of them is this beautiful gown from Meiling. I am always pleasantly surprised at the variety of styles Meiling makes available. This one, called Club 51, mixes just the right amount of casual sexiness with elegance, with its long flexi skirt and adorable back-tie.

When I think of elegant places in SL, the lovely, sun-drenched Solaria always comes to mind. I haven’t found a bad angle there yet, it’s totally and completely picturesque. And a kind gentleman I ran into today told me there are even underwater ruins—another delightful surprise! So if you haven’t checked this beautiful sim out yet, put it on your list. It is a rental area so please be respectful of the residents.

Today I went for a stroll in this cute, comfy set from Poise. I really like the set up of the Rejectz sim. This is an adult role-play sim though, so if you visit make sure you are aware of and follow the sim rules.

I am also trying out a new skin from Inaya. I love the sassy face and straight-across eyebrows. While Naalyeh Raleigh makes some very charming faces (and her darker skins are really lovely), they lose a bit of smoothness with atmospheric settings or shadows turned on. I took the photo below with only basic lighting. I am enjoying getting to know her work and look forward to what she comes up with next.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Electric Indigo

Today is my one-year blog anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than with a great color challenge??? I was actually thinking this was going to be a hard week, but the problem turned out to be too much indigo rather than not enough!

For our first electric color, I decided to honor Ben Franklin, that canny jack-of-all-trades that brought us greater understanding of the properties of electrical forces. (I stole that line from my scientifically-minded friend Stewart) While perhaps his key did not glow, and he definitely did not have as sassy a kite as I have, he certainly paved the way for future electric fabulousness. For those of you who don’t know the key story, you can read about it here.

Now for a couple of fabulous new items. First of all, Arkesh Baral at Mayfly has released her first mesh eyes. I have to admit to some uncertainty about how a mesh eye would work, but they were a cinch, and even better, they are resizeable so if the iris is too big or small you can adjust. And yes, they do work with the GI eye autofocus hud. All good so far! Oh, and did I mention how beautiful they are?

And last but not least, Maxi Gossamer is jumping on the mesh bandwagon with her gorgeous jewelry designs. These earrings were perfect for this week’s color, although I have to admit I loved all the colors that were available:

It’s been a great week for new releases and a couple of them have been of the ocular variety. Eyes are hard to make well, especially if you want them to be at all realistic-looking. I look at some of my snapshots from my first days in SL and I look like Cruella Daville much of the time—psycho crazy eyes. In this SL day and age there are a lot more options—some uncannily beautiful. Now Agnes Finney has gotten onto the eye bandwagon and she has recently released some lovely designs, which should come as a surprise to no one who knows Agnes’ work. My friend Isabelle was gracious enough to model them for me.

Isabelle is also the embodiment of grace in this timeless classic from Carisma Creations.

Today one of my colleagues was telling me about her twenty-year old cat who is on her last legs. As cats go, she is a beautiful one, and the sweetest love I ever met. Sadly I am allergic to cats and have to admit to being a dog person, but if I could have cats, I would have loved to have a girl like Sugar. Today I made the very big mistake of thinking that today was going to be like every other day weather-wise that we have had lately; namely forty-degree weather even though it is January. It would appear that Mother Nature finally woke up from her nap and realized she had been quite remiss with regards to her winter weather! I walked out the door in my jacket and my hair (which was still partially wet because yeah, I’m just super chic like that) immediately froze. So I had a choice, run back inside and get a coat, or run for the car. I chose the latter. This seemed like a good idea until I got to work and had to walk a quarter mile down the street to my school. Let’s just say lessons learned.

So my girl today is similarly inappropriately dressed, in low-rise leather pants and a wispy short-sleeved thing from League. My only nod to practicality are my boots from J’s and my arm warmers—and even they are too lacy for much protection. But they are so cute! And I had been waiting for a chance to wear this great feather necklace from Graffitiwear.

I am really enjoying trying out the different mesh hairstyles that are increasingly available—this one is from Wasabi Pills and you can see that my av managed to get her hair dry before leaving the house!

It’s BACK! Here we are in a new year and looking forward to 52 weeks of colorful inspiration. To learn about the color challenge check out Luna Jubilee's introductory post. To start off: Champagne--which I imagine was consumed in copious amounts last night. And since we are reflecting on past years and looking forward to the new I wanted to pull out some old favorites. Today began the last Fifty Linden Friday, and boy, am I sad to see this amazing event go. I happened to run across this lovely gown from Dashwood while I was doing some shopping the other day. Named Pippa, it does bring back to mind that gorgeous Sarah Burton bridesmaid dress that Pippa Middleton wore so elegantly. Today I was in the mood for color, though, so I chose the deep red option. When you are going to be formal, one of the best-known (and crowded) places to go is Franks. This place has been around as long as I have been in SL, and I have never seen the place empty. That’s saying something. It’s a beautiful place, once everything rezzes! More on that further down…

See all those folks behind me? After half an hour most of them still hadn’t rezzed yet. This is usually the case in a location where there are lots of avs hanging out. Firestorm/Phoenix has included a texture refresh option on the pie/context menu so that you can make those darn folks rez! You can right click on the person who isn’t rezzing and choose Texture Refresh:

A fantastic group gift from Miel inspired me to do a bit of trekking around my cabin this week:

Please no catcalls from you experienced snow-shoers out there about my stride! My outfit is from Severed Garden and my red cheeks and dry lips are again from Miss Izzie Button. This girl needs to get herself some Chapstick!

After all that it was time to go in and sit by the Christmas tree and relax a bit. This tree is from Cierra Anatine at Kismet. I am a bit particular about my Christmas trees and the truth is that there are just not a lot that really look like a tree as much as a bunch of linked prims in SL. This one is my favorite this year, with it’s perfectly wound ribbons and individual ornaments. A word of warning though, this tree packs a punch at 126 prims. There is a basic version with no ornaments that doesn’t use quite so many prims. Wonder what’s in those boxes, hmmmmmm?

Sweet Caroline

One of the sweetest people I have met in SL is Caroline. I’ve known her since my earliest days in SL and have wanted to do a shoot with her for some time. Now, not everyone wants to have their picture taken—I know because I’ve asked! However, Caroline readily agreed and turned out to be a natural, so you’ll probably see more of her! One thing I admire about this talented lady is her ability to rock the blonde look. Being a resigned brunette myself, no one appreciates this more than I do. And when I saw this cute pink winter outfit from Cameron Vasiliov, I knew it would be a perfect fit:

One other relatively recent release is a new tattoo layer set from Izzie Button, who most graciously allowed us to temp-rez at her store so we could do the photo shoot. My cold-flushed cheeks are due to her amazing ability to create facial color variations. Thanks, Izzie!

A couple of days ago I stumbled upon this beautiful build by Maizon Rayna and Maveryck Breen. Maizon is well known for her fashion designs at Terra D’Ombra, and in my opinion is one of the best builders on the grid. The textures and design are gorgeously done. If you get a chance definitely take a wander around the place.
To do the locale justice I chose a form fitting mesh design from Pretty Lady Designs and a chic fur stole from Laville. Izzie Button’s warm golden leather clutch helps me blend into the sunny, Mediterranean locale.

My shoes are a new release from Nardya Rousselot. This color is actually a hunt gift available for just 10L—aren’t they sweet? My jewelry is from Dandara Swords at the Pumpkin Head. Dan was one of the first friends I made in SL and she has really been a great resource for me in a lot of ways—but today I show one of her Vintage Fair creations in pearl and green opal, which perfectly match my deep green eyes from Ikon Innovia.

I have been wanting to blog this knitted coat ever since I saw it, but I had a really hard time deciding what to wear with it. It is just such a gorgeous piece that it kind of overshadows everything else you put on, with it’s detailed stitches and cute floral accents. Finally I decided to combine these adorable knit socks from Knickknack with comfy and stylish wedge boots from Ayla.

Truth is definitely where I go when I want casual hairstyles, particularly the soft, wavy kind—and this new offering, called Helena, is in keeping with his always excellent work. There is regularly fabulous newness at Truth—the man is so prolific I can barely keep up! (Let it be noted that I fully enjoy barely keeping up!!!)

Underwhelming

When I moved to New England from the Southern United States I came with some expectations about the winter. Like that it would be cold, and that there would be snow. I grew up in the western United States where there was always abundant snow and my home state is one of the most popular for skiing in the country. But we always heard about this super-wintry Northeast weather. So we have been here about six years and on only one of those years have I actually had to wear my winter coat. And also only one year have we had any snow to speak of. So it’s a little disappointing to have to get my snow fix from SL, but there you go. Today I wandered around the North Pole Sleigh Adventure sim and it was really quite enchanting. It’s worth checking out. Just watch out for the sleighs, I did almost get run down a couple of times!

My scarf, earrings and pants today are all from the Designer Circle this week. This cycle won’t last much longer so get over there while you can!

The leaves have finally fallen off the trees and New England has taken on its characteristic gray. It has definitely had an impact on my mood lately. I wandered around Death Row Designs and found this dead, drying Christmas tree just outside the store entrance. A remembrance of festive times, but a little bit sad. It makes me want to go turn on the lights on my fake green Christmas tree that will never die, listen to cheerful carols and wrap presents!

December. The last month of the year. This song by the excellent Mark Knopfler came to mind after a conversation that I had with a friend this last week. Since wintertime is right around the corner coldness is about to become omnipresent, and while that means holidays and cheer and time with families, it also signifies death, starkness and emptiness. Perhaps those are the things we try to avoid thinking about with all our holiday merry-making.

The lovely Evana skin from Carisma Creations adds the perfect touch of frosty haughtiness to my cold-hearted woman today, with it’s angular shape and cheekbones and jawline that could slice you right in two. Also contributing to my icy demeanor is the bold new Snowflake set from Yula Finesmith. And what could be more wintry than these ingenious icicle pumps from Harmless Ink?:

The new Catherine lace dress and Bess feather jacket from Agnes Finney add snowy richness to the ensemble. The jacket in particular is meticulously put together and the feather prims fall naturally and beautifully no matter what position you are in. I think this just might be my favorite Agnes of all time.

My husband and I watch the new-ish series called Nikita on the CW. Based on the excellent 1990 Luc Besson film La femme Nikita, it’s an assassin-turned-rogue-who-is-out-to-take-the-big-bad-covert-ops-organization-down kind of story. It is actually well written and acted, and the actors are pretty believable, particularly Melinda Clarke, who plays the chilling and sadistic Amanda. However, the title character, while I do like the writing and back-story, is a little harder to believe. Maggie Q plays Nikita, and while she is a brilliant little actress and stunningly beautiful, she cannot weigh more than eighty pounds soaking wet. And she regularly takes down men that weigh 200-300 pounds, usually armed as well. Just. doesn’t. happen. In the first episode she assassinates a huge disreputable guy with her bare hands in public while wearing only a bikini. Probably every heterosexual male’s hottest fantasy, but still. Really?

Anyway, though it stretches the imagination a little too much, it’s an entertaining show and I like watching the fight scenes. All this came to mind when I received two particular items this week. One is this amazing new hair from Likeli. Seriously. This hair is amazing, there is just no other word for it. I would love hair like this, although it would get in the way of punching people. The other is this teeny tiny dress from Zeljkogirl Solo which I believe would be very hard to kick butt in, but Nikita does it regularly, and sometimes in high heels. And when the hand-fighting goes south, there is always this no-nonsense (and free, I might add) pistol from AGrid Aftermath.

One of my advisees at school was expressing some angst recently at the fact that no high school boys like her. Rye is 6 feet tall and has legs up to her ears and is truly one of the most spectacular-looking girls I have ever met. And she’s fifteen. It doesn’t help that she looks like she’s twenty-five. How to tell a girl like this that all she has to do is wait? That the time will soon come when no one is going to be able to notice anyone else when she is around? And is your academic advisor really the person you want to have tell you that you are beautiful? At fifteen she doesn’t care about in a few years and the now is all-encompassing. Oh, I do remember that. But really, it IS normal for sophomore boys to be totally clueless when it comes to girls. I see it every day. I hope she recognizes that, and remembers.

Rye has hair just like this, long and thick and wavy—maybe Truth Hawks was thinking of someone like Rye when he created this design. Rye also has a beautiful, individual face. When I put on the new Wendy skin from Unique it immediately reminded me of her. I have always liked the glow in Nany Merlin’s skins and I also like the delicate bone structure, particularly along the bridge of the nose and brow ridges. This skin is more than up to her standard, with it’s beautifully shaped nose and soft texture.

I discovered a mesh treasure-trove at Ever An’Angel this week and have been having all kinds of good time wearing multiple mesh items at once. This beautiful jacket from Ever Courtois and denim skirt from Jada Humby are perfect for the crisp outdoor weather.

Today I am wearing the beautiful Eliza skin from Apple May. With its smooth tone and rosy cheeks, it is one of my favorite skins to date—and not just because of the name! Two of the best things about Apple May skins are the realistic flush and facial color variation that are present in every skin I have purchased. Love, love, love.

Harvest Time

My friend Gypsy was kind enough to do this photo shoot with me this week—I had been wanting to do it for sometime, but one thing or another kept popping up...you know how it goes. Anyway, we started off with this adorable hay bale and cornstalk group set from Adele Rhiadra.

Next we tried out a Halloween gift from Katey Coppola. we called this our Charlie’s Angels pumpkin stance (although we are both wearing decidedly more clothes than any Angel I ever saw). Watch out, a pumpkin can do quite a bit of damage, you know!

I have many beautiful friends in the SL world but Gypsy has got to be right up there at the top of the list. Sometimes she will show up and I will just stare. Not creepily, mind you. Just in that envious, I-hate-you-but-really-just-want-to-be-you way. Just look at that face—no, let’s call it what it is—the whole package; it’s just stunning. In the pictures where there are two of us, your eyes go right to her. And even when I am a bad friend and don’t talk to her for weeks and then say “Hey, come let me take your picture and by the way could you come up with a stylish outfit?!?!” she doesn’t bat an eye, just shows up looking like a million bucks. She simply stands out because of who she is, and I am grateful that we get to travel this SL path together for a time.

Hideaway

My mother used to need to get away at times for a few days and just be by herself. (Well, if you had eight kids you would too!) Thank goodness I have a dad who understood completely and gave her the time she needed. I have nothing like her excuse, but I have inherited the desire to go away sometimes where there is no one around but me so that I can deal with my own thoughts. Usually this urge occurs in the fall and heading towards winter. Although with this winter storm that hit the East Coast this weekend, it seems like we have skipped autumn and jumped straight to winter. Maybe it is a hibernation instinct. And I never actually get to go away and be by myself, but I can imagine, right?

Well today I was wandering around looking for empty autumny places and found the perfect retreat at Totem Flow’s Autumn Hideaway. Totem has combined some gorgeous landscaping with charming decorative detail. I wanted to move in immediately—or at least curl up and stay awhile!

The adorable cottage is from the talented Winter Thorn and I have to confess I went out and bought it immediately. I may have to create my own little hidey-hole somewhere. For the past few days I have been wearing the beautiful new Tekla skin from LAQ and it is becoming one of my favorites. My vibrantly colored sweater is a recent mesh release from Jada Humby.

Here we are at the final week of the challenge. It’s impossible for me to condense how much this challenge has meant to me into a few words. Let’s just say I am in turns relieved and heart-broken. At the beginning of this challenge I didn’t even know how to take a snapshot, let alone do any kind of photo-editing. I have learned so much from all of you and offer my heart-felt gratitude for all of your encouraging comments and your friendship.

The Autumn I Wanted

Fall is my favorite season. I love the cooler temperatures, the ability to wear jackets and sweaters and scarves. I love how the natural world bursts into color for one last hurrah before the killing temperatures of winter send it into hibernation. This year it sort of passed us by. We have had unseasonably warm temperatures. Hurricane Irene layered all our trees with salt so they just turned brown instead of changing color. And then it got cold and rainy. Where is my autumn!?

Since I couldn’t find it in real life, I found it at the magnificent Aquitaine sims, that have been decked out for fall. I am snug and warm in my tights, scarf and handwarmers, and can still enjoy the sunshine. And my gorgeous boots from Opium are just made for leaf-crunching! Today my skin is a relatively new one from Mallory Cowen that is very flattering with my tousled hairstyle from Kik.

There are plenty of fall-themed regions to visit this year, but if you are in the mood for a good old cornfield complete with ghosts then check it out, it makes for some fun wandering about.

For my cornfield wandering I chose this adorable tie-dress by Gocha Merlin. I love the details and the cute floral accents. And the sentiment written across the back is a good one to remember at any time! Walking in a cornfield also requires good footwear and these adorable boots fit the bill exactly with their subtle summer-to-fall coloring.

My skin is from a new-to-me designer, Gianni Broda. This beautiful skin named Godiva was only 30L and once I put it on I did a double take. Here’s how it went in my mind:
-30L? Well, at least the G of the Alphabet Challenge won’t break the bank…
-Wait. Only 30L? For a skin??? Let’s have a look….
-Holy heck!!! 30L??? It’s gorgeous!

This is more a mature looking skin, but still retains a healthful smoothness. I particularly love the bone structure across the bridge of the nose and the cheeks.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Cream

My mother grew up on a dairy farm and actually really liked milking cows. One of my sisters had a passionate wish to be a farmer, and so my mother dutifully took her down to the dairy farm so she could get to know the animals that she would be working with one day. Having lived on a farm for most of her life, she definitely knew the cure for a farming passion!

So as you can imagine, my sister got a whiff of what farm animals smell like. And the dream of being a farmer died a swift and ignominious death.

I am sure these adorable SL cows are as sweet-smelling as the field of flowers around them. And what would we do without cream? Ice cream, whipped cream, chowder, sour cream, the world just wouldn’t be as pleasurable without them. So thank you dear cows, even if you don’t smell like roses we are still glad you are around!

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Mulberry

My husband grew up in the Canary Islands. On his island, there is still a tradition of raising and harvesting silkworms, and weaving the silk. When my husband was a small boy, he would raise silkworms to help his mother earn some extra money. And the favorite food of silkworms is the leaves of the mulberry tree. My husband has told me the stories several times of how the silkworm’s voracious appetite kept him running all day cutting and collecting mulberry branches. Even now he just can’t believe how much they eat.

So the next time you pull on a silk garment, take a moment to respect the worms. It’s an arduous process. You can read more about it here.

Awareness

This month there is so much information flying around about breast cancer awareness that it can be hard to sort out. If you type in “Breast Cancer Awareness” in the SL search window you will be inundated with pages of events going on to raise money for breast cancer research. When I tried to think of someone I knew that had battled this disease, I didn’t have to look far—more than one of my friends have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer just in the last few years. It is a disease that affects many.

I am not usually one to promote donations to organizations. My feeling is that individuals should investigate reputable organizations on their own and donate where they feel their contribution will do the most good. And there are a lot of them out there.

So during this month, do your research. Should you feel inclined, attend an event. Visit a breast cancer awareness location in SL. Make a donation to an organization that you feel will put your contribution to the best use. And hope for the day when there is a cure.

That line is never so poignant as it is spoken just after “You can die too, for all I care!” and just before “Oh, my sweet Wesley, what have I done?” Then again, how many lines are out there that can induce a girl to throw herself down a mountain after her captor? Why are those three words so romantic when our current vernacular is as likely as not to be irritating? Some examples:
“Whatever you want”
“Up to you…”
“Just as you like”
“If you say so”
and my favorite:
“Yes ma’am” (gosh I miss the south sometimes)
Somehow it just doesn’t have the same ring.
All this came to mind after receiving Guinevere Decuir’s new “As YouWish” tattoo. There is a slew of new stuff out there so I kind of did a mash-up of whatever I could get to look good together. My sweater and top are new from Janie Marlowe. The cropped sweater is a new mesh item—this color is a customer appreciation gift, but the other available colors are great as well. The yellow undershirt is an addition to Janie’s Needful Things line…and for me Janie’s designs definitely tend to be needful! My shoes are a new design for autumn from Vero Modero.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Marchesato di Sant’Elia, make some time to visit. It looks appropriately fall-like in these photos but really it could be any season depending on the area you are in and the angle. And check out the Palazzo Donna Emilia—it’s really quite beautiful.

Fall is my favorite time and there are some lovely and festively decorated sims right now and they are making me wonder why it is still eighty degrees in my part of the world. One of those great places is Truth District, and I found this great sweater and boots at the Ducknipple store. Check out the fall event there and don’t forget to notice the fall décor! Fall also brings scarf weather, at least in theory, so it seemed like a good occasion for this colorful but subdued design from Zeery.

If you haven’t visited the Aquitaine sims then you have really missed out on one of the masterpieces of SL. The whole place is decked out for fall. Make sure you have some time though, because the place is huge. I recommend the carriage tours, since the possibilities for getting lost are insane.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Wenge (aka the WORST CHALLENGE WEEK EVER)

So wenge is a type of tropical wood that is popular with guitar and bow makers. Hm. So I delved into a heretofore unexplored area of SL, that of weaponry—namely, the bow and arrow. Not a pleasant experience, my friends. Oh, and the bow and arrows don’t work like you THINK they will. Oh, no. The bow and arrows think you are going to shoot them, and nothing else. So if you want a picture of yourself shooting, why, you have to have someone ELSE log in and take your picture while YOU are in mouselook on a SEPARATE computer shooting! Yep, that’s the only way it works.

If you have ever read Robin McKinley’s superb novel The Blue Sword, then possibly this look will ring a bell with you. It’s quite a bit like I imagine Kentarre of the filanon looked like. At any rate, if I ever consider picking up a bow and arrow again, please just stop me!

One of my AP Spanish students inspired me for today’s ensemble. Allie is petite, casual, and is one of those girls who just looks stunning in whatever she puts on. (It is startling and sometimes depressing how many of these students I have!) She also happens to be someone who struggles mightily in my class but who works her heart out and has gained an incredible amount of skill. An extremely smart and hardworking girl. Add kind and responsible to the mix and what you have is someone pretty special. It’s kids like her that make me love what I do.

I was so excited to receive one of Agnes Finney’s latest designs. This gown, aptly named Darling (isn’t it just though?) reminds me of being young and carefree, wearing white dresses and running around with flowers…before age and real life, responsibilities and grey hairs set in. So completely beautiful with it’s embroidered skirt detail and lace sleeves. There are some long skirt options as well with this dress so it’s really like getting three dresses in one. Always a good thing.

This hair, I must say, is most definitely not grey, and is one of Alice Demonia’s new mesh designs. It cascades fantastically down the back of my dress and stays outside my body, where it belongs. And it’s only 44L at the 4.44.444 event.

It has been a continuous treat to experience the creative designs released at Meiling. The new Last Train To San Fernando collection is based on a real life collection (gosh, would I love to see this stuff in RL!) and combines turn-of-the-century style with modern flair and sexiness. I love the fit and fabric texture of the For Ladies Who Brunch gown—the drape of the fabric in the chest prim in particular is lovely. Since the top of the dress is a prim, a bit of adjustment may be necessary depending on your pose.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Moss Green

This is one of my favorite colors in the world. So when I typed in “moss” in my inventory I was shocked to find only a couple of items. What I did have was some lovely mossy rocks. Now there’s nothing like a hike over the craggy peaks!

At a girl’s youth camp this summer I was teaching the kids about orienteering and doing compass courses, etc. The girls could not believe that I could figure out where we needed to go by looking at the sun, at my little spinning dial and at moss on trees. Where I live moss grows primarily on the north side of trees and rocks, since it gets the most shade. They were astounded—but completely excited when they figured out how to do it, too. Fun times.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Khaki

The word khaki comes from a Hindustani word adopted by the British during their Colonial occupation of India. The word means dust or earth-colored. I am not such a fan of military attire and even if I were, there is not a lot to be had in SL. However, for camouflage, it is a helpful color for wandering literally (or figuratively!) through the desert.

New Stuff Catch Up And Real Life Resonance

Vero Modero’s fall line has been released and immediately upon seeing this new outfit I wished it was something I could pull off in RL. Today in REAL life I spilled tea all over my shirt right before my first period class and had to wear one of my students’ lacrosse T-shirts for the rest of the day. So the look of pleasure and respect I might have gotten with this outfit from Bouqet Babii was replaced with children’s laughter and sympathy. Oh, well. TGIF.

My hair is a new release from Queue Marlowe and it also coincided with my real life, since I actually wear my hair like this sometimes. Of course my hair never looks THIS good.

Finally, I am wearing the new Catalina skin from Apple May Designs. The outfit does cover up a bit of it, but I promise I will show this skin again, so you can see it better. I am always so excited to see anything new that comes out of Apple May. Finally my beautiful amethyst jewelry set is from Iron Tiger and can be found at the Jewelry Fair, which runs through Sunday, September 25th.

Phoenix Dying

My friend Dandara Swords released these beautiful Phoenix earrings at the Jewelry Fair and it got me to thinking about the famous phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes legend. If you’ve read or seen Harry Potter then you’ve seen one interpretation. Usually the phoenix is an inspiring talisman—life will go on, the unquenchable hope for the future…you know the drill. What we forget sometimes is that the phoenix spends a fair amount of time as ashes, as nothing more than a pile of discarded carbon particles, without hope, without life, nothing. Not as insipiring, is it, although it is extremely relevant to life. Is it any wonder that we prefer to think about the phoenix in its fiery, transformative glory?

The Fire sim at the Jewelry Fair is the perfect backdrop for such a creature, as is this lovely gown from Ley-Ly.

Variations On A Theme—Jewelry Fair 2011

I remember attending the Jewelry Fair last year and can hardly believe a whole year has gone by since then. The Jewelry Fair is open and will run through September 25th. This is one of my favorite events in SL and this year it has been designed around four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. The four sims, designed by Angelica Leiner of Angelic Designs and Roseana Pera of Pixie Paradise, are gloriously rendered and in my opinion are as photo-worthy as the jewelry.

Every year I marvel at the imaginative talent that is brought to bear on this event. A portion of the money raised at the Jewelry Fair is donated to Oxfam, and it is heartening to see the widespread embrace of this cause by the jeweler’s community. As I went through the sims for the first time, it was apparent that many designers had taken on the theme whole-heartedly and brought not only their regular designs, but also items that reflect the four Elements themes of this year’s fair. So below are some of my favorite examples from our creative jewelry designers in SL. Next to each item description is the location of the sim where the designer display is located.

This fun Derriere Challenge comes from Gogo over at Juicy Bomb. I was talking about it to a friend today and he said that usually butts look better when they are clothed. I had to laugh, but sort of secretly agree. Sadly, the maker of my very favorite shorts of all time in SL closed up shop almost a year ago. Thank goodness I got them in time! 52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Brick Red

Since we are on round 2 of brick colors, I started thinking about what I have seen lately that is both brick and inspiring. I recently took a trip with some students to Newport, RI to visit some of the opulent summer “cottages” built in the late 19th century. Famous mostly for the Vanderbilt family and for their ornate construction, they are a sight to behold, overlooking the cliffs that lead down to the ocean. It’s obvious why those Gilded Age ladies probably loved the summers spent in Newport. If you ever get a chance, check them out. These folks were as close to royalty as Americans can get.

The Jewelry Fair started today and these lovely earrings are from the Archduke Joseph set by Endra Graves and suited my Edwardian dress from RagDollz perfectly. So many possibilities and so much to choose from…..my Linden balance is in serious trouble!

Today I decided to wear Alice Demonia’s new mesh hair and boy is it amazing! It manages to be smooth and shiny and always stay on the outside of my body! I am looking forward to more of Alice’s work. Also in the mesh category are these super-sexy knee high boots from Damien Fate.

Today is a very painful day for many Americans. While it’s important to not dwell constantly on the pain of things past, it is important to acknowledge something that affected so many American lives and our national identity so much. My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones on the eleventh of September, 2001. We still remember you, as well as those who were lost that day.

I don’t think it’s really possible to portray the 9/11 kind of pain and loss in SL pictures, and it’s probably inappropriate to even try, but there are other, perhaps less devastating kinds of loss that we endure in our pixel lives. Gillian Galicia inspired me in her post last week showing her lovely pixel self definitely not at her pixel best! So here’s my take. Also note that even when our av bodies stumble and even collapse, Janie Marlowe’s lovely mesh clothing flows and folds with us.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Bronze

This is week 45 of the 52 Weeks of Color Challenge. When I saw the color for this week, it reminded me of the time I spent in France and the mimes who would paint themselves this beautiful color and go out and pose in the streets or the cathedral plazas. They would stand so still it would be uncanny and you would wonder if they were really human. Inevitably some small child would approach and get very close only to be frightened out of their minds when the “statue” moved. I remember vividly one such artist who would always set up in the Place Jean D’Arc in Rouen—that’s who I had in my mind as I put this week’s challenge together.

And here is a picture of a real life gold mime artist in case you haven’t ever seen one---pretty cool, isn’t it?

After complaining loudly in the color challenge group chat the other day about how I could barely keep up with the colors and that the whole alphabet thing would be way too much, I got thinking about how fun it would be….why not use this obscenely large inventory….etc. Hence this post. First comes A, and the only thing I cheated a bit on was my dress, the creator of which has a name that does begin with A, so it’s only a bit of a cheat. Go ahead, judge me.

I actually used a location that started with A as well—the Alafia Country Trailer Park. Why do I love that sim so much?!!?! And my poses are by Avant, just in case! Memo to me, make sure you have room in your picture to fit all the text!
